We believe that leadership is a potentially contested concept. It is hard to agree on any single or simple definition of leadership. Leadership can mean different things in different contexts and for different people. Understanding what leadership means in your organisation has implications for the recruitment, training, assessment, recognition and reward of so called leaders.
Professional, functional or technical competence does not equate to management and leadership competence. Aspiring managers or those relatively 'new in post' or managers / leaders with no formal training need support to build management and leadership competence.
